In March 2024, I got a call at 7:42 a.m. from a client—an IT device brand launching a new point-of-sale terminal. They needed 5,000 OEM power adapters. Not generic chargers. Safety certified OEM power adapters. For India, they needed a BIS adapter version. For the EU and UK, they needed an international AC adapter with the right plug kits and efficiency marks. Normal lead time from our approved factory was six weeks. We had 31 days.
I work as a procurement and emergency operations lead at an electronics OEM supplier. I have handled 200+ rush orders in seven years, including same-day turnarounds for point-of-sale, networking, and industrial computing clients. So I am not easily rattled. But this one made me pause. That was close enough to ask the right questions.

Our chosen factory already had a BIS adapter registration on a similar model. The question was whether our requested changes—different label, different DC cable length—would require a new registration. Honestly, I'm not sure why one vendor's BIS file cleared in 11 days while another took six weeks. My best guess is local test-lab scheduling and how complete the initial file was. The Turning Point: A Certified Platform, Not a Custom Build

For the EU and UK, we shipped the international AC adapter version with the correct efficiency mark and plug kit.
We delivered the first 1,800 units to India by air with two days to spare. The rest reached the EU warehouse four days before the launch. The client's compliance team approved the files in 36 hours. Nobody sent a thank-you note. But the client placed a follow-up order in Q3 2024, this time with a 60-day lead time and no rush fee.
Bottom line: the project cost about $93,000 instead of the $86,000 base. We spent $6,900 extra to protect a $120,000 penalty clause and a launch. That is a ballpark I would sign again.
What I'd Do Differently
I would not wait for a rush order to ask for the certificate file. I now require three things before any OEM adapter manufacturer gets on our approved list:
