SDMO Generators: The Questions I Answer as a Quality Inspector
I'm a quality compliance manager in the power generation equipment industry. I review every generator set before it reaches a customer—roughly 200+ units a year. Over the last 4 years, I've rejected about 12% of first deliveries because the specs didn't match the purchase order. From the outside, SDMO looks like just another name in the industrial generator space. The reality is a bit more specific. SDMO is a French company founded in 1966, and since 2005 it's been part of the Kohler group. That partnership matters: you're getting Kohler's engineering standards and testing protocols applied to SDMO's generator set designs.
What I look for when I review an SDMO set: certified engines (mostly Deutz, Perkins, or Kubota, depending on the model range), control panels designed in-house, and consistent documentation. That last one is rarer than you'd think. A lot of manufacturers ship generators without complete test certificates or readable wiring diagrams. It's tempting to think 60 kW means "60 kW of anything I plug in." The reality of load calculations is messier than that.
A 60 kW SDMO generator (often rated around 75 kVA at 0.8 power factor) will handle a typical small commercial building—lights, outlets, a modest HVAC system, a couple of pumps. But motor loads are the catch. A pump that draws 10 kW while running can draw 30 kW for a few seconds at startup. If three or four motor loads start at once, a 60 kW set can trip.
The sizing mistake I see most often: people add up running watts and ignore starting watts. I've rejected more sizing calculations for that than for any other reason. Do the starting load math before you buy, not after.
3. SDMO vs Generac: how do I compare a 60 kW SDMO diesel with a 22 kW Generac?
This one comes up constantly, and the honest answer is that you're comparing two different product categories.
The Generac 22 kW with transfer switch is a residential or light commercial air-cooled standby unit. It runs on natural gas or LP, it's designed for occasional outage coverage, and it's a perfectly valid solution for what it does. I don't fault Generac—they've done more to popularize standby power than anyone in the industry.
The SDMO 60 kW is a liquid-cooled diesel generator set built for commercial and industrial applications. It's designed for extended running periods, it has tighter voltage regulation, and it's built to a much longer service life expectation. They don't really compete in the same space.
If you're backing up a house, the Generac bundle (generator plus transfer switch) is a proven, sensible choice. If you're protecting a business, a farm, or a telecom site, the SDMO industrial diesel is the right tool. Asking "Generac vs SDMO" is kind of like asking "pickup truck vs semi truck"—both haul things, but not the same things.
4. What should I look for in a diesel generator catalogue?
A catalogue is a sales document, not a specification. When I evaluate one, I look for five things specifically:
- Standby and prime ratings declared separately. If it just says "60 kVA" with no duty clarification, that's a problem.
- Fuel consumption at multiple load points. A single number at full load isn't enough to estimate running costs.
- Sound level at 7 meters at 75% load. dBA figures tell you more than marketing language about "quiet operation."
- Alternator brand and insulation class. This tells you whether the set is engineered or just assembled from parts.
- Control panel specifications. Auto-start, ATS interface, remote monitoring—these decide how useful the unit actually is during an outage.
The good catalogues also reference standards like ISO 8528-5 for performance and NFPA 110 if you're in North America. If those specs are missing, it's a red flag. One published complete technical data; the other just said "diesel engine." The second one never found out why it lost the bid.

Neither, in most commercial cases. And I do not mean that as a dismissal of those products.
The Briggs & Stratton and Generac whole-house units are built for residential backup. For a home, that comparison is meaningful: compare noise levels, warranty terms, fuel source, and installed cost. For a business or industrial site, these air-cooled units usually won't survive the duty cycle. They're air-cooled, they run on natural gas or LP, and they're not designed for hundreds of running hours a year. If that's your application, look at a liquid-cooled industrial diesel from SDMO, Kohler, Cummins, or similar brands.
6. Do I need an automatic transfer switch with my SDMO generator?
If the generator's job is to keep a business running during an outage, then yes—and the ATS is arguably more important than the generator itself.
Here's why I say that from experience. We had a generator on site for years that ran fine in monthly no-load tests. The transfer switch, though, had never been tested under actual load. When we finally ran a full load-bank test including ATS transfer, the switch failed. That one failure cost us an $18,000 redo and delayed a certification audit.

7. What checks should I do before accepting a generator delivery?
Here's the checklist I use, and honestly, you should use it too:
- Check the rating plate against your purchase order. The kVA/kW and voltage must match exactly. You'd be surprised how often they don't.
- Verify engine and alternator serial numbers against the documentation. If they don't match, stop and ask why before you sign anything.
- Inspect for transit damage. Radiator fins, control panel wiring, exhaust connections—those are the spots that take hits.
- Ask for the factory load test report. A reputable manufacturer will have run the set under load before shipping. If there's no report, request one before commissioning.
- Get warranty terms in writing. What's covered, for how long, and who actually does the service.
In 2023, we rejected a whole batch of generators because voltage regulation was 4% deviation against our 2% standard spec. The vendor claimed it was "within industry standard." We rejected the batch anyway, and they redid it at their cost. Now every contract includes our voltage tolerance spec in writing.
That's the prevention-over-cure principle at work. The inspection is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
